language politics in the middle age in western Austria





I just come back from a trip to the Austrian Alps. In one of the valleys,
Walsertal, western Austria  bordering to Italy, I found a panel that gave the
history of its inhabitants that moved there in the 14th century.

Next to some other reasons, the Walser population (people from a german speaking
region in today`s Switzerland)  were invited by the local feudal German speaking
power, to move into this valley because they spoke a Germanic language and coud
counter the linguistic influence of the Italian (romansch)dialects/languages
that still remain there as names of most of the mountains and passes.....
